THE TREE CALLED STEFAN
Getting to know the old maple that has grown among us for 100 years.
Stefan matters first as part of a living landscape. It is a mature tree that supports nature and gives this place a recognisable symbol. Its wood, leaves and roots store carbon from absorbed CO₂. Around the building, the canopy and living ground layer slow moisture loss during dry periods. In summer, shade and leaf transpiration reduce the heating of walls, windows and the roof, so the inside of the building is felt as cooler.
The council noted that a tree may provide habitat for plants and wildlife, including protected species. This does not confirm that Stefan is currently used by protected species, but it is certainly home to singing birds. Any work should first consider nesting birds. In practice, the main nesting season is usually treated as March to August, and active nests, eggs and chicks are protected under the wildlife protection law.
